How I lose weight and keep healthy

According to the powers that be, the top new year resolution for people this year in the U.S. is to shed some pounds. Some want to take off a lot and some just want to tone. What I am about to disclose is how I took off 50 lbs. in a few months.
The reason I wanted to lose is I didn't realize how much I had put on. My wife had made some mild remarks but nothing that devastated me and I laughed it off. It started because while shopping for a new bathroom scale, I said how do you know the cheaper ones are as accurate? I put a scale on the store sales floor and stepped up on them and it registered at 300 lbs. The last time I had weighed myself I was at 260 so my reaction was see, I told you these aren't as good. She then said , get on one of the more expensive ones which I did without hesitation because I was confident they would be more accurate. So, I grabbed the higher priced brand name and it said 299 lbs. so I grabbed yet another one even higher and it said 299 lbs. to which I slyly said with a half grin, they must all be wrong. Then of course I asked why she had not mentioned how heavy I had gotten, All of our married life we have been honest (well, at least she has been) about weight and so forth without being hurtful. She reminded me of her remarks and how I laughed them off to which I came up with every excuse as to why I passed it off as not really true, thought she was picking, or whatever but I knew I had to do something. My problem is I never had a weight problem because at 6'1 and 240 - 260 is not bad. I worked concrete construction and winter weight always came off quickly by mid June and then a little more by summers end and I ate as I wanted because I was burning off the extra calories. By now though, I had gotten to a point in my job where I was the guy in charge on the job and although I was a working foreman, I had to take time out of my day to meet with the homeowners(we set forms for basements on new homes) on locations for utilities and windows and such and would do more brain work and layout and such and less physical and I was now 40 yrs. old. Enough said?
I know that if you came here to hear how to lose weight I will get to it soon and some may just skip ahead and make their judgement on will it work or not but, all weight loss has a back story that needs to be told. First of all I will tell you not to waste your money on Jenny Craig, nutrisystem, slim fast or any of those get slim quick schemes because they are not healthy, You need to tell yourself that not only do you want to be thinner, but you want to be healthy. I know people who are constantly going on a crash diet of some kind or another and they are at the doctors office much more than me and a lot younger. One such person in his 20's went on Nutrisystem and was telling me how much he had lost and how it must be working. Being another construction worker I reminded him of the conversations we had about how he and his wife were down sick more often and how they were taking this weekend to lay around because of how they were both feeling a little run down and needed a r & r time. That's all well and good but in your 20's? Lets now top that with some mild digestive disorders and then Gout. It was never proven what was the cause but I knew this person all of his life and was always very healthy and even a bad cold or touch of flu didn't keep him down and even his physician had him bring in one of those meals and said the ingredients were not near the protein or calories he needed to sustain a healthy lifestyle and top that with the work he did is what probably brought some of this on. Now you might tell yourself that all of these women on TV testimonials have done these plans and look at them, let's talk about them. First of all, they are commercials for the plan, they aren't going to pay someone to tell you how it did not work for them, second, most are celebs lately and are getting paid to promote this. They don't talk about the fitness trainer and the nutritionist they keep on the payroll and the doctor who for a good price makes house calls and such. Think about it this way, many celebs take off lbs. for roles in movies and they always succeed because of the bevy of people they hire to get them there.
I have always been a big boy as mom would say. When I played midget football and the weight limit was 113 lbs. at 10 yrs. old I had to diet and for a long time there was a lot of hub bub about forcing kids to diet was cruel but not by any of those that wanted to play and I was one of those.so my mother put me on a diet. nothing too drastic though, for instance baked potatoes with just a hint of butter, salads had just a taste of oil and vinegar dressing and iced tea was without sugar and toast was dry and we went on like this for the few weeks till weigh ins and I would make it. Later on in high school I joined the wrestling team and weighed 205 but, the guy in that class that I would have to challenge was a state wrestling champ and lived this sport everyday and I was no match for him and I had just lost 30 lbs. in football season with 2 a days and what not so I looked at the 185 weight class and there was not even one person to fill this class so I went for it. Again my mother wrote out a diet  and I asked my coach for permission to go into the sauna(we didn't have a sauna but we did have a room in the basement with the boilers for heat and room to jog around them wearing sweats and a damp towel) and in no time I took off the needed lbs. to wrestle varsity matches.
Now fast forward to 1976 when in July my family moved to Florida and I was a senior in school and turned 18 and then after school I was working in construction and staying fit because lets face it , at 18 and looking, you want them looking back and I was into sightseeing at the beach. Those of you who say there is nothing to see at the beach but water, well, I feel sorry for you. Think back to when you were a teen. Anyway, in not too long of a time, no matter where you live, life is about going to work and paying bills and having a relationship you spend many days on dinner dates and watching TV and so on and inevitably you stop those workouts and then the relationship ended and I looked and there I was at 230 lbs. There I was at 20 yrs. old and anyone who remembers the eighties knows that construction was starting to slow down in the late seventies so my work was in spurts. There was a coffee shop I would frequent and became good friends with the help and some of the waitresses would slip up and make one too many chef salads and the manager would ask if I was hungry for a salad on the house. This became habit for about 3 or 4 days a week and a chef salad was big enough for a meal. I wasn't trying to lose weight but next thing I knew I was a slim 190. Something I hadn't seen since my days in wrestling 4 years earlier.
This is when I met the woman who would be my wife and has been for 32 + years. This was a couple years ago so i we were at twenty something yrs. then and both in our forties and my wife although she doesn't say so has always looked good to  me but always wants to take off weight or inches in the waistline.
Anyway, she told me she didn't care if I had gained but at our age we ought to concern ourselves with health issues and our weight so, I lost it before this way and I did it again. I ate more sensibly such as less butter on the potatoes, coffee black instead of cream and sugar, iced tea straight, potato chips down to only one night on weekends and , A chef salad was supper 3 - 4 nights a week with less dressing though this time around and exercise. I started to do more physical work on the job and setting forms that weigh about 90 lbs. one after the other(most jobs require about 200 - 300 forms) and carrying them back and forth and bending to pick them up and set them down and so forth. Plus we started taking walks in the evening for about an hour during 3 seasons. This can really help and don't continually weigh yourself. Instead looking in the mirror. This will tell you if you are getting there and don't worry if it takes time. I have known many again in these crash diets who take it off fast but when they get to the ideal weight and stop, they gain it back almost double and again start risking their health again.
Remember that when you consider buying into one of those weight loss plans or on of them pills that promise to take off weight, read the label and I promise they all say the same thing, "With this supplement, Incorporated with diet and exercise".......
I know that some will say they can't diet but they do. They don't realize that whatever they eat is their diet. That is the only difference, You either diet smart and healthy or you don't.

Many years ago I got into a betting pool with co -workers about weight loss and thought I had the ace in the hole because I had gotten a copy of what I was told was the Mayo Clinic diet and guaranteed to lose twenty pounds in two weeks. This diet was laid out day by day with all the meals and what to eat. For every day breakfast was 3 eggs poached and dry toast and coffee black. The others were still with eggs and some greens such as spinach and of course dry bread and coffee or tea black. on an on and then after about 4 or 5 days I had not lost anything and gorged on some pizza and the next day I found myself in the bathroom all day from the end it is supposed to but still, this is not healthy. I did weigh in 8 lbs. lighter in the week but was not well. It ain't worth it if you are not healthy and happy with the way you look.

By the way, I always had my coffee with cream and sugar until I did this diet and when I got off of it I could not stand coffee except black only. So I guess it had it's benefits
Also when I mentioned the couple years ago weight loss and said coffee black only I am not contradicting it about the only black coffee after that diet 30 yrs. ago because that was only way I would drink it but I got into stopping at a coffee shop everyday and having an American french vanilla "cappuccino"(I use the quotation marks because these are not traditional cappuccino but that's another subject. but I cut these from my schedule and just had one occasionally. You don't have to suffer. This is how I did it. Salads are very healthy, good for roughage, anything usually green and leafy is also good to help with cholesterol concerns and so is taking the walk. Also a glass of red wine is good for aid in digestion and lowering cholesterol. And no with the wine more is not better, about a glass or two a day or so is good. over that will not make it come off faster. But it will help regulate you if you have a couple glasses at dinner of a good red wine like a Merlot or Burgundy or a Rose'. It did for me but your metabolism could react a little different. Find what works for you. Think about what you did way back when weight came off without really trying. and be patient.
